Kuwait Society For Formative Arts During

Invasion

On The 2nd of August 1990 Iraq savagely invaded the state of Kuwait. It was clear from the outset that the real existence of Kuwaitis was the aim, rather than the material life of Kuwait, nor the infrastructure of the state, with its institutions and facilities. But the people of Kuwait showed a good will to fight back for their national sovereignty, and never yield. So Iraqis could only inflect losses a material life in Kuwait. But Kuwaitis themselves stood as great patriotic through their love of their land.

The Kuwait Society for Formative Arts, which has been for 25 years working to promote plastic art, was suffered much as a result of the Iraqi invasion an Kuwait. Hundred of art works were damaged or looted, in addition to 1500 and periodicals, which disappeared from the Society office, as well as the archives which, required so many years to be collected. Something in this Iraqi invasion is reminder of the Tartars who once conquered Baghdad during the 3rd Century, where they burned or threw the books of its library in the Dijla River. Does history repeats itself? For Iraqi troops did the same to peaceful Kuwait; they burned, destroyed and looted most riches of the country; they tortured people in order to eradicate their national identity However, Kuwait Formative artists now continue their role in rebuilding, as they did during the occupation. First, they handed out a lengthy referendum about the invasion to the International Art Association (IAA) in Paris, to inform about the atrocities the Iraqi regime has done in Kuwait. The document described the great damage and destruction the occupation left behind, thereby affecting the cultural movement in the state of Kuwait, and revealed the falsity of Iraqi slogans in the face of reality. The referendum asked the IAA to suspend Iraqi membership in it. Meanwhile, many Kuwaiti artists attended a meeting in Cairo and held, in cooperation with the Union of Kuwaiti Students in Egypt. (Alexandria branch) during 1991 an invitation from the United Arab Emirates they held on an artistic event in sharja, Abu-Dhabi and Bahrain. The event included a symposium named "Kuwait formative Art and the effects of the Iraqi Invasion", in which they debated the role of artists of Kuwait, and the possibility of work in the circumstances, especially when they realized that Arabs were divided as to this great problem. Some Arab Countries them stood firmly beside the Kuwait rights in their national land.

invasion2.jpgOne main point of the symposium was the Consequences in the possible split of Arab Countries favored the Iraqi military act. Arab Countries favored the Iraqi military act. And it was obvious that this will aggravate the arising situation.

Another point in the symposium argued about the Iraqi behavior inside the then occupied Kuwait, the looting and destruction of various governmental institutions, ministries, hospitals and the university; the Kuwait National Museum, which acquires the most valuable collection of Islamic rare antiquities belonging to Dar Al-Athar AL-Islameya, was ruined, or burned.

In front of all these atrocities of the Iraqi troops, what could be conveyed to the next generations? The Iraqi regime proved to be very malicious and bad neighbor.

On the other side stood Kuwaiti peaceful, but militant people. They always show off a noble spirit when dealing with the Iraqi invasion of their dear land.

Artists of Kuwait in the wake of the invasion established in the Emirate of Al-sharja a branch of their Formative Art Society, with the help of the cultural, artistic and literature Department and the United Arab Emirate plastic art Society. At last, Kuwait is free, and artists of Kuwait are back again in their land and among their people, by virtue and good hand of honest nations of the world. True, Kuwait is now free in spite of everything. Its sky is bight, after days of the plight.

Once again Kuwait artists extend their hand to cooperate with their colleagues in the world to rebuild the domain of culture and art. We believe that this can be achieved through unification of efforts of thousands of artists all over the world. In this atmosphere of peace and love we can ensure a safe future, full of joy, right and freedom for all.
